Daniel Regard, CEO and Co-Founder of the award-winning iDiscovery Solutions, Inc., ("iDS"), will be presenting a position paper entitled, A Re-Examination of Blair & Maron (1985), on Friday, June 14 in Rome, Italy. The paper, co-authored with iDS Director, Tom Matzen, will be presented as part of the 3rd Session to the DESI V Workshop on “Standards for Using Predictive Coding, Machine Learning, and Other Advanced Search and Review Methods in E-Discovery”. The session runs from 2:30pm to 3:30pm Central European Time.

I am proud to have Daniel Regard presenting our paper at the DESI V event in Rome." commented Mr. Matzen. “David Blair & M. E. Maron wrote a seminal piece on full-text retrieval. It is important for our industry to look back on what we have learned, and still can learn, from their study, while appreciating that we cannot compare the results they achieved with potential results today, especially given the incredible new technology and knowledge we have now. We wish to thank Jason Baron, the workshop’s co-chair, for this tremendous opportunity.”

Mr. Regard will then make his way to the The Sedona Conference’s Fifth Annual International Programme on Cross-Border Discovery & Data Protection Laws in Zurich, Switzerland spanning June 19 & 20, 2013 at the acclaimed Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue. The conference leaders will lead spirited “Sedona-style” dialogues addressing actual dilemmas which arise when data protection laws conflict with U.S. preservation and discovery obligations. Breakouts will explore genuine predicaments and develop practical cutting-edge solutions to these common cross-border legal issues.

“Participating in this invitation-only event is always exciting,” proclaimed Neal Lawson, President of iDS. “We are honored to be a part of an initiative that focuses on the practical application of Sedona’s International Principles to real-world data protection challenges.”

"The Sedona Principles are an important step towards bridging the gap between the different legal systems on civil procedure & data protection which exists in Europe & the U.S. in practice,” said Jacob Kohnstamm, Chairman of the Article 29 Working Party.

About DESI V

The DESI V workshop is intended to focus on best practices and standards for using predictive coding, machine learning, and other advanced search and review methods in e-discovery. The scope of methods to be considered includes applications of automation to any aspect of e-discovery (e.g., early case assessment, review for responsiveness, or review for privilege) with the goal of improving accuracy, reducing cost, or both. The workshop is intended to build upon past discussions in ICAIL/DESI forums in promoting the use of AI and other advanced forms of search techniques in legal settings, as cost-efficient alternatives to traditional Boolean and manual searching.
