The bill from the California legislature and signed by Governor Gavin Newsom is a sign that the nation’s most populous state and one of the world’s largest economies understands that immigrants bring prosperity, create more jobs, and make our state a better place to live.

Immigrants are the backbone of America, Henry Posada agrees.

The bill is the latest indication of California’s leadership in acknowledging and embracing the great contribution made by immigrants to the state and national economy..

An October 14 article from KTLA 5 reports on a new law signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom which allows undocumented immigrants to serve on government boards. It also prohibits immigration arrests on California courthouse premises and expands student loans to Dreamers – younger adults brought to the US as children by undocumented parents – to cover graduate school. “Our state doesn’t succeed in spite of our diversity — our state succeeds because of it,” said the governor in the law's official signing statement. Los Angeles-area immigration attorney Henry A. Posada says that the bill is the latest indication of California’s leadership in acknowledging and embracing the immense contribution made by immigrants to the state and national economy.

Unfortunately, says Mr. Posada, many people tend to think of immigration as a zero-sum game in which every newcomer takes a share of limited resources, including jobs. Henry Posada notes, however, that it’s not as if every new immigrant takes a slice from a giant pie, reducing the amount of dessert left for the rest of the population. A much more accurate view, economists and others agree, is that immigrants each bring a great many ingredients for the pie and also aid in its baking, thereby creating a great deal more pie for everyone, says Mr. Posada.

The giant pie might not be the most original metaphor, adds Mr. Posada, but economists agree that immigration is a necessary ingredient for a vibrant and growing economy. Mr. Posada notes that, whether he is representing clients on business immigration matters or people who are seeking to obtain lawful permanent residence (green cards), they all bring their own set of skills, which are often informed by their cultural background and then influenced by the realities of the American scene, says Mr. Posada. He adds that California law offers more pathways to immigrants and the result, he says, is California’s status as one of the world’s primary hotbeds of innovation.

The immigration attorney adds that, whatever field is being discussed, it’s almost impossible to imagine it without the contribution of immigrants. From technology, finance, and entrepreneurship to business to the arts to manufacturing, mass media, music, and -- of course – food, immigrants have brought their knowledge and abilities and adapted their creations to the local landscape, says Mr. Posada. He adds that the cultural richness which still makes the United States the world’s cultural trendsetter is due in no small part to its historic openness to newcomers from around the world. . He adds that the cultural richness which still makes the United States the world’s cultural trendsetter is due in no small part to its historic openness to newcomers from around the world. He adds that California will continue to benefit from its more open attitude towards immigrants -- and so will other states that follow its example.
