GCO consulting and Strike Force Energy sponsored a spectacular event on Saturday March 30th in Purcellville, VA. On this chilly morning, over 200 participants of all ages came together at Woodgrove High School benefiting the EOD Warrior Foundation.

Mission Volant Flying in the American Flag to star the 5k

I was really impressed by the number of strollers that were out there running the slightly muddy course.

EOD stands for, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, the disarming and disposal of bombs. EOD technicians are highly-trained military members serving in the Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force who are responsible for disarming, rendering safe and disposing bombs. The EOD profession is one of the most dangerous occupations in the military. On average there are over 7,000 brave men and women serving as EOD technicians who willingly put themselves in harms ways to protect the lives and property of others. Their service includes support to the most complex special operations missions.

The morning started with an amazing line of vendors that provided demonstrations such as diving by the Navy dive team from Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group TWO, and robotics by the Loudoun County Bomb Squad and the Dahlgren Navy EOD team. Additionally, there was a Navy recruiting team present with a water craft display. The highlight of the morning’s events occurred when Mission Volant put on a thrilling skydive performance, when three skydivers jumped right into the center of the crowd, landing on Woodgrove High School’s football field. The final jumper honoring our American Flag by deploying a 1000 square foot flag after leaving the plane. This was the inaugural 5K at this location, and although the beautiful cross country course was slightly muddy, it did not stop families of all sizes from crossing the finish line together. Sean Matson, Co-Founder and President of Strike Force Energy said, “I was really impressed by the number of strollers that were out there running the slightly muddy course.” The fastest 5k time was 17 minutes and 42 seconds.

Following the Family 5k, three participants stepped up to the plate to attempt to break the 1-mile World Record, running while wearing an 80lb Bomb Suit. Sean Matson, not only sponsored the run, but also stepped up to compete in the world record attempt. He led the pack with a 9:34 1-mile time. Though he did not break 1-mile World Record, he ran blistering 400m and 800m, which set two World Records. The 400m time was 1 minute 28 seconds and the ½ mile time was 3 minute 30 seconds.

All participants and volunteers did an excellent job and total funds raised for the foundation was 10 thousand dollars! We are thankful to everyone that participated in this event and to all of the people who continue to support the missions of GCO consulting and Strike Force Energy to support our military and our communities. We are thrilled to start planning the 2020 event!
