Independent retailers can use Little Independent to promote their stores and turn sale merchandise more quickly. The concept and website were developed by the owners of a bicycle shop that were having a hard time selling a high-end bicycle helmet.
June 1st was a hectic day for Roscoe Village Bikes’ owners Alex and Lesley Tweedie. There were dozens of tune-ups to be completed and flat tires to be repaired. There were new bikes to build and boxes to unpack. On top of these typical bike shop activities was the launch of their new ecommerce website Little Independent.
The founders decided to wait until the fall to step up outreach to independent bicycle dealers. “At the end of the busy season, every bike shop finds itself with some slow turning merchandise. Maybe we bought a few too many. Maybe it was a special order item that a customer decided not to purchase. For whatever reason, our regular customers passed on it and now it’s taking up space,” says Little Independent founder Lesley Tweedie.
Little Independent is a place for independent bicycle dealers to sell those items and promote their store. It’s not an auction site. It’s a shopping website where all the items for sale are offered by independent brick and mortar retailers. A retailer can sell any item they have chosen to discount at least 10% off its original price.
41 stores are using the site to enhance visibility, access new customers, and turn inventory more quickly but currently there is only one bike shop on the site. Founders Lesley and Alex Tweedie hope to change that fact by inviting every independent bicycle dealer in the country to give the site a try this fall.
