According to officials at Yes Bank, a private bank in India, the country’s raw organic food market is growing an average of 20 to 22 percent annually. Yes Bank officials attribute the growth to increased spending power in the middle class sector and a general move toward more organic, chemical-free, health-conscious and natural food products. The market is expected to continue growing globally, too, going from revenues of $57.2 billion per year to a whopping $104.5 billion by 2015.
MSSD shares these tips for going organic in the U.S.:
- Look for food with a “USDA organic” seal
- Go to local farmers markets
- Plant your own vegetable and herb garden
- Check food labels carefully
- Cook at home; avoid eating out a lot
A diet of raw organic food features foods in their natural form. These foods are free of chemicals, pesticides and additives, and are left untreated and unprocessed. In most countries a food must meet certain standards in order to be certified as organic. In the U.S., the USDA handles these certifications. Raw and organic food products are believed to have some health benefits, including: higher levels of nutrients and minerals, improved digestion, weight loss, increased energy, detoxification and a stronger immune system. In addition, organic foods help improve the environment by cutting down on soil pollution, airborne chemicals and harmful pesticides.
