October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month, and Andrew Feld, owner of the Fresh Patch real-grass dog-potty company, is contributing to that effort. “Our customers pamper their pups, but we all know that many dogs out there are not as lucky," says Feld. "We're always looking for ways to help dogs in need." Along with other efforts, Fresh Patch currently donates product to the mobile adoption unit of Best Friends Animal Society in Los Angeles. "They have an amazing mobile division that is extremely successful in finding good homes for these pets. By taking fully disposable, real-grass dog potties along to their events, the Best Friends staff members can meet the dogs’ immediate bathroom needs while encouraging by-passers to see, fall in love with, and adopt a dog right on the spot.”
“Those of us who love dogs and are in the dog business are doing all we can to promote shelter and rescue adoptions and thus reduce the thousands of cases of euthanasia that occur each year,” says Feld. He notes that several large companies that sell dog products, such as Pedigree dog food, Purina dog food, and Hartz flea and tick products, are making either financial or in-kind contributions to facilitate shelter adoptions and dog welfare, and many are featuring information about dog adoption on their web sites.
According to Feld, “Many shelters report having dogs who are loving and well-tempered, but who unfortunately became separated from their families and lacked the identification needed to reunite them.” Whether lost dogs or street dogs, Feld says that shelter dogs are likely to appreciate their new homes and many can become extremely loyal and dedicated to their new owners.
“We all need to do our part to give shelter dogs a chance for a good home and a good life,” says Feld. He hopes that the Fresh Patch company, in its own way, can help to promote shelter-dog adoptions, not only in October—the month dedicated to this goal—but throughout the entire year.
