Researchers have found there are more benefits of having indoor water fountains than just the soothing effect of bringing natural sounds into homes and offices. Wall fountains can not only reduce the amount of dust and other particles in the air, but also releases negative ions which can have a big impact on health.

Ever wondered why it feels so good to sit at the beach, by a rapid river, next to a waterfall or even outdoors just after a rainstorm? The reason for the good mood is given by Michael Terman, PhD, of Columbia University in New York when he said; “The action of the pounding surf creates negative air ions and we also see it immediately after spring thunderstorms when people report lightened moods”.

The world is full of positive ion generators. This includes computers, televisions, air conditioners, fluorescent lights and more. Positive ions make one feel tired, depressed and irritable. Homes and offices are full of these positive ion producers. Negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain making one more alert and less tired. They have been shown to be an effective treatment of some forms of depression, including Seasonal Affective Depression (SAD). “Adding negative ions to the air increases work production and employee moral” stated Justin Combs, owner of Adagio Water Features.

Negative ions also purify the air by removing dust particles, cigarette smoke, dust mites, viruses and more. This is done by attracting the particles until they join together in a heavy bunch. These bunches are then pulled by gravity out of the air, onto the floor or other surface where one can sweep or vacuum them. This is a great benefit for those who suffer from seasonal allergies or asthma. A recent study by the US Department of Agriculture found that bacteria in the air was reduced by 95% when ionizing a room, which in turn makes one much less likely to get sick or spread diseases to others.

Fresh country air is said to have between 2,000 and 4,000 negative ions per square centimeter. A major city with heavy traffic has been measured to have as little as 100 negative ions per square centimeter. A room with a running air conditioner can have no negative ions at all. Dr. Hansell with RCA Laboratories stated, “This explains why so many people in air conditioned spots feel depressed and have an urge to throw open a window.”

So what can be done about it? A great way to increase the negative ions in a home or office is to install indoor water fountains. When the water runs into the bottom tray, it releases negative ions into the air. This will help neutralize the positive ions and purify the air. With wall fountains one will be able to breathe fresh air, feel better and be more productive.
