In-Mold Decorating (IMD) or In-Mold Labeling (IML) is a process for labeling or decorating a plastic component during the injection molding cycle. In the IMD / IML process, a label or printed film is placed in the open mold and held in the desired position by vacuum, electrostatic charge, or another appropriate method. The mold closes and the plastic resin is injected thus encapsulating the label or film.
In-Mold Decorating (IMD) / In-Mold Labeling (IML) offers many design flexibility and productivity advantages over traditional post-molding decorating techniques. These benefits include multiple colors, effects, and textures from a single operation; long lasting and durable graphics; and a total system cost reductions.
IMD / IML allows the customer to achieve different colors, effects, and textures in a single step when the injection molded part is removed from the mold. No secondary operation is required - the part is complete after molding. When the graphic requirements change, there is no need to modify the mold - just simply modify the graphics on the IMD / IML film.
IMD / IML graphics are long lasting. Since the part graphics are encapsulated in the resin, the graphics cannot be removed without destroying the piece part. Graphics will not fade and remain vibrant for the life of the product.
Several manufacturing advantages can be achieved utilizing IMD / IML such as the elimination of secondary operations, the elimination of material such as adhesive, and the reduction of inventory.
