I was shocked when I won

Intermarkets, Inc., the nation's leading independent advertising sales management firm for Web site publishers, awarded the second annual $5,000 Intermarkets-Lucido Journalism Scholarship to Daniel C. Yates.

"I was shocked when I won," said Yates. "My dad called me at work. He said there was this big envelope for me. I was really, really excited."

Yates attended the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School for Government and International Studies in Richmond, VA. This summer, Yates holds a paid internship at the Richmond Free Press. This fall, Yates will attend The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA, the second oldest college in the nation.

"I thank the Lucido family and Intermarkets for their generosity," said Yates.

Intermarkets Chief Executive Officer Kevin Lucido created the Scholarship to recognize an outstanding graduating senior in Virginia who understands and promotes the importance of non-biased journalism in the United States media. The Northern Virginia Community Foundation manages the annual Scholarship.

Applicants were required to submit an essay that reviewed a current, published article and explain why it was biased and how it should be changed, a description of extracurricular activities and academic accomplishments, and writing samples.

"Intermarkets is pleased to award the Scholarship to such an exemplary candidate as Daniel Yates. His well-written essays, writing samples, and added components reflected an excellent understanding of responsible journalism," said Lucido. "We're also grateful for the number of excellent applicants for the Scholarship this year. We're happy to see more and more students comprehending the significant power of journalism, and how the media can pursue honorable public service," he added.

The objective of the Intermarkets-Lucido Journalism Scholarship is to contribute to the funding of journalism studies for students who understand and value the enormous responsibility journalists have to get the facts straight from at least both sides of a story, without bias, and without malice. The Scholarship reflects the importance of unbiased journalism in the defense and functioning of democracy.
