Jaclyn Anderson, Director of Business & Branding Development for Marc-Michaels Interior Design, Inc., sat on the expert panel to discuss Central Florida’s 2013 new home design trends. This presentation by the Home Builders Association of Metro Orlando's Sales and Marketing and Design Councils took place on March 6, 2013.

Anderson presented Marc-Michaels Interior Design, Inc.’s take on design trends for 2013. She, along with other panel members from Canin Associates, Phil Kean Design and Centerline Homes, discussed what potential home buyers are looking for in 2013 home floor plans and elevations. Interior detailing is being focused on more and becoming a priority in the budget when floor plans are created.

At the top of her new home design trend list was the great room. New home buyers are interested in open floor plans that are all encompassing of the kitchen, living room and formal dining room to create one space known as the great room.

Another new home design trend is bringing the indoors, outdoors. “People want to extend their living rooms to the outdoors and the interior designers are seeing more requests for outdoor living rooms,” said Anderson.

Also included in the panel discussion was the latest national and local design trends of what home buyers want most in their new home.

Flex space is important in 2013 for growing families, young adults returning home from college and the elderly moving in with their caretaker. Building and designing a home with flex space allows rooms to fit the lifestyle of the buyer.

A spa-like bathroom experience is of interest to most buyers. Clients are requesting that the bathroom, and tub particularly, remain open to the bedroom vs. closing it off in a separate room.
