ipCapital Group, Inc., the nation’s leading intellectual property and innovation strategy consulting firm, has hired Kate Purmal, a renowned business strategist and serial entrepreneur as a Senior Advisor. Purmal has founded three companies and two non-profits, and has consulted with more than thirty start-ups and more than a dozen Fortune 1000 companies. She was part of the original team at Palm Computing and was a Senior Vice President at SanDisk. She brings valuable business strategy skills to ipCapital to help support and feed into ipCapital’s IP strategy work.

“I’m very excited to join ipCG,” said Purmal. “I have worked together with ipCapital in several client engagements to develop intellectual property strategy and assist in IP valuation and licensing. Through their engagement with ipCapital, my clients were able to develop new IP-related business strategies to secure higher valuation and identify lucrative licensing opportunities through the strategic development and use of their core IP.”

Purmal’s expertise includes media and entertainment, wireless communications, computer hardware and software, clean tech, life sciences, skincare and beauty, and consumer products. Her past clients include Intuit, Hewlett-Packard, Handspring, Palm Inc., CBS, Clorox, SanDisk, and dozens of start-ups. Most recently, Kate was SVP and General Manager of the Digital Content Business Unit at SanDisk, where she negotiated 7-figure licensing deals with music, movie, and television studios to deliver digital content and services across SanDisk products.

Prior to SanDisk, Purmal served as CEO of U3, a software company formed as a joint venture between SanDisk and M-System to develop and license a technology platform and core IP contributed by each entity. She and her team negotiated technology licensing deals with dozens of USB flash drive manufacturers. Purmal served as the U3 lead on a highly strategic cross-licensing deal between U3, SanDisk, and a Fortune 100 software company.

For the five years prior to her time at U3, Purmal founded and ran Driver Group, a management and strategy consulting firm. Prior to Driver Group, Purmal was a founding member of the senior management team at Palm Computing where she grew the company to more than 300 employees and $300M in revenue. At Palm, she built and ran the Product Marketing organization, then launched the PalmOS Platform and formed the Developer and Strategic Alliance organizations. Before Palm, she held senior roles in marketing, product marketing, business development, sales, and engineering at Interleaf, Grid Systems, and Computer Associates.

“Kate’s strong business acumen will provide invaluable direction to our clients,” said John Cronin, Managing Director and Chairman of ipCapital Group. “The business strategy work she does will directly drive the IP strategy, development, and implementation work that ipCapital does.”
