By the time this hits the press, the much talked about iOS 4.2 software update for iPhones and iPads could now be available. Rumours abound on various gadget websites and blogs that this exciting first major update to the iOS 4 operating system is due for release this week bringing lots of extra features to both your iPhone and / or iPad.

According to the Apple iPhone website, with the new update userswill be able to enjoy a Multitasking feature that (depending on the iPhone type as not all will be compatible with some elements of the update) allows the user to run their favourite third-party apps and switch between them instantly (as long as the apps have been developed to work with iOS 4).

Users will be able to tidy up and manage their mail a lot easier, with a unified inbox and the ability to organize messages by threads. And they can enjoy iBooks, an ebook reader where they will also be able to browse and shop for books. Plus lots more!

"It's all exciting stuff and no doubt we'll all be on iTunes downloading this update as soon as it happens," says Stephen Ebbett from iPhone insurance provider Protect your bubble. "However, before you do so, make sure that you have all your existing data backed up - just in case something goes wrong during the update," warns Ebbett.

"Most downloads will happen without a problem," he says, "but, something as simple as inadvertently stopping the download before it has finished or losing your internet connection, may affect your existing data. Taking a precautionary back up of your data beforehand could potentially save you a lot of hassle in the future as well as upset over any lost data."

Free data back of up to 3GB is available with iPhone insurance from Protect your bubble, so for iPhone insurance holders, if they haven't done so already, now may be the time to go online at http://www.protectyourbubble.com/gi-free-data-backup.html and make sure they've backed up their mobile phone.

And for iPhone owners who haven't got iPhone insurance, now may be a good time to get covered. From only £5.99 a month, not only can they have the peace of mind that all their data is backed up, but that their phone is covered against theft, accidental damage, break down outside of the manufacturer's warranty period, as well as loss cover for an extra £1 a month.
