Whole Foods Market, recently named VMSD magazine’s Peter Glen Retailer of the Year, will be the focus of a special session at the 2011 International Retail Design Conference in San Francisco, September 7-9 at the Parc Wyndham.
Christine Sturch, Whole Foods’ Midwest Interior Design and Branding Coordinator, will accept the award on Thursday, September 8 and discuss the role of store design and visual merchandising in the success of the Austin, Texas-based brand.
“Whole Foods has long been regarded as the most innovative retailer in the food sector, leading the way not only with natural and organic selections but also with smart store design, green building practices and outstanding visual merchandising,” said VMSD Editor at Large Steve Kaufman.
The Peter Glen Retailer of the Year Award honors VMSD’s former columnist, Peter Glen, who died in 2001 following a career in retail as a designer, consultant, industry critic and motivational speaker.
The award goes annually to the company that meets his demanding criteria for smart retailing, market awareness, innovation and an intuitive understanding of who its customers are and what they want, need and expect. Recent winners include Best Buy, Costco, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters and Forever 21.
Other highlights of the 2011 program include keynote presentations by Chip Conley, Founder and Executive Chairman of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, and Rob Forbes, Founder of Design Within Reach and PUBLIC Bikes; sessions on designing for the millennial shopper, unifying in-store technologies, growing retail brands with smaller stores and much more; networking roundtables; the sixth annual Iron Merchant Visual Merchandising Challenge; and San Francisco architecture and design tours.
