Iris Technology Corporation has been awarded a 5-year, $13.5 million contract by the Department of Defense to provide the USMC with the Iris Merlin-3™ radio power adapter, which serves as an alternative power source for the Harris Falcon III® AN/PRC-117G multiband manpack radio. Unlike other adapters, which completely replace the existing radio battery, the Merlin-3 fits between the radio and the existing battery. The Merlin's hot-swap feature allows battery change-out for recharging without radio interruption or crypto-fill loss. While Its primary function is to power the radio system, the Merlin-3™ also exports significant power to run laptops, auxiliary speakers, and other accessories.

Iris Technology Corporation, an Irvine, CA-based defense contractor, has been awarded a 5-year, $13.5 million contract by the Department of Defense (DoD) to provide The United States Marine Corps (USMC) with the Iris Merlin-3™ radio power adapter. The Merlin-3's primary function is to serve as an alternative power source for the Harris Falcon III® AN/PRC-117G multiband manpack radio.*

"When Harris introduced the 117G, Iris Technology recognized it as a game-changing technology. We wanted to introduce something that would be as equally game-changing, and we succeeded," said Edward O'Rourke, Iris Technology CEO. "Nothing out there is as versatile, powerful and efficient as the Merlin-3™."

Unlike other adapters, which are designed to completely replace the existing radio battery, the Merlin-3™ fits between the radio and the existing battery box and uses a standard, full size, rechargeable BB-2590/U or BB-390B battery. Because it uses existing parts, the Merlin-3 reduces system cost and weight.

When a battery or other power source is attached, the Merlin-3 serves as an uninterruptible mobile power supply (UPS). It exports up to 100 W to directly power a wide variety of accessories including laptops, auxiliary speakers, and small personal electronics. Connections are made using Iris-provided "smart" cables, so the system is self-configuring.

The Merlin-3™ has a 97% efficiency rating and receives input from a host of AC and DC power sources. Solar circuitry is built into the device, which easily connects to portable solar panels and is Solar Power Alternative Communications Energy System (SPACES) interoperable.

The compact Merlin-3™ weighs only 1.8 pounds. It attaches to the existing battery pack latches without modification or tools and requires no controls. The hot-swap feature allows battery change-out for recharging without radio interruption or crypto-fill loss.

"We added features to ensure that this was the most versatile piece of gear in the warfighter's bag," said O'Rourke. "From the frame up, the Merlin-3™ is intended for maximum reuse and interoperability with pieces of the 117G family and other tactical equipment. The goal was, and the outcome is, minimum burden with maximum reward."

The Merlin product family includes the Merlin-2™, a backward compatible adapter for use with the AN/PRC-117F, AN/PRC-138, AN/PRC-150, and AN/PSC-5D radios. Available on GSA, this robust line of equipment is the latest addition to Iris Technology's collection of military power systems and closely follows the success of Iris' SPACES program for the USMC.
