Ironworks, a management, Web and IT consulting firm, is pleased to announce that the redesigned website for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) has increased website traffic by almost 115%, and also led to rising social media interactions and more museum memberships.
VMFA engaged Ironworks to implement a new content management system along with a full creative redesign of its site http://www.vmfa.museum. Launched in April, the new website is user-friendly, easy to maintain, exudes brand identity, and promotes interest in the organization and the services it provides.
“The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has transformed its existing galleries with the addition of the James and Frances McGlothlin Wing, the Claiborne and Lora Robins Sculpture Garden and a 600 space parking deck museum complex,” states director Alex Nyerges. “The transformation carries over to our virtual museum with a well-designed website, robust social media and WiFi in the Museum to enable visitors to stay connected.”
The new website has improved VMFA’s site usage significantly, more than doubling the average time users spend on the site and increasing the number of pages per visit.” Ironworks also positioned social media features on the home page that have increased social media interaction between VMFA and its visitors. VMFA’s most recent Twitter entry is displayed prominently on the home page.
All pages in the site may be shared on popular social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter using the “Share” feature located in the header.
The VMFA blog has been integrated into the VMFA website making the content searchable throughout.
Users of the website may now subscribe to updates to the VMFA website through their RSS feed readers.
High resolution images of popular works of art housed within the VMFA permanent collections can be zoomed to show the detail of the piece and are also easy to share with friends and followers.
The VMFA’s new website launch coincided with the Museum’s transformative expansion project, which added 165,000 new square feet to its existing 380,000 square-foot building. The public grand opening of the Museum was celebrated in early May of this year. The new website, along with the expansion, has led to an increase in museum visitors and memberships. Together, the new website and expansion have greatly enhanced the way visitors experience VMFA.
In addition to the creative redesign, Ironworks leveraged Ektron 400.NET Content Management System, giving VMFA a website that can be easily maintained by content contributors within the organization. Content contributors are now able to add, modify and publish their own content without involving IT. Workflow allows business areas to review and approve their own content, decreasing the turnaround time for getting new content out to the public.
