"Acne's still out there and likely will be for decades to come," notes Dr. Nissan Pilest, a 31 year dermatology veteran and medical director of Total Dermatology in Irvine, Ca. "The techniques for controlling acne are evolving all the time, but the causative factors have generally been countered most effectively only with topical or oral antibiotics. Isolaz Acne Laser treatment is a dual-technology procedure which removes impacted sebum from the pores (sebum is the "food" for acne breakouts) while at the same time kills present acne bacteria with medical light waves. Patients have their skin "vacuumed" as the unit provides suction strong enough to pull thickened oil from the pores but not so strong as to be painful in any way. Immediately a special bacteria-killing light follows the suction action.

The removal of the acne bacteria food source is crucial in the control process. Prior to Isolaz there has been no process, other than manual extraction, that accomplished this task. The bacteria-killing light speeds healing of the existing acne and reduces the proliferation of bacteria on the skin to prevent inflammation and redness. Pores can return to normal size once the over-collection of oily material is removed.

"The one-two punch of Isolaz has proven in my clinic to greatly reduce the number of acne lesions for my patients and the severity of breakouts when they do occur," Dr. Pilest notes. "For patients who are antibiotic resistant or simply don't wish to take antibiotics, it's now the top level method for a totally non-medicinal method of acne improvement and control. There will always be instances when antibiotics are called for, and initially, the two treatments provide a strong measure of improvement. But from a medical perspective, removing the underlying food source for the acne bacteria creates a particularly beneficial response."

Isolaz is generally undergone once weekly for 4 to 5 weeks for about 20 minutes each session. As the pores are progressively cleaned out, patients enjoy skin that is clearer each week. Following the very first treatment, some patients may experience what seems to be more acne (very temporarily) but what has happened, Dr. Pilest explained, is that the acne that was subsurface is being pulled up more quickly. The response after the 2nd treatment is almost always markedly positive.

Dr. Pilest also has had ongoing success with Photo Dynamic Therapy for cystic acne. PDT takes advantage of a bacteria killing topical amino acid called Levulan which is absorbed by abnormal cells of acne and actinic keratoses. PDT is a much more aggressive procedure which can bring about excellent improvements for those with resistant acne.
