A £2.5 million contract to install and manage internet connections at a major new student accommodation project in Bradford has been won by local firm Exa Networks.

Exa Networks, which employs 16 people at its base in Cottingley, near Bingley beat several companies including Virgin and BT to secure the 20 year contract at The Green, an eco-friendly student village which is part of a £150 million development at The University of Bradford.

The deal also offers potential benefits for city centre businesses. To provide internet connectivity at The Green, Exa Networks will be creating a new onsite data centre. This will also offer state-of-the-art services to local organisations needing to send and receive large amounts of information over the internet quickly - and the facility will be cheaper than currently available.

Exa Networks, founded in 2003, specialises in IT connectivity, networking and specialist software for businesses and the education sector.

Mark Cowgill, Managing Director of Exa Networks, said: “As a local firm, it is tremendously exciting to be involved in The Green and also to have the opportunity to make massive improvements to the digital infrastructure in Bradford city centre.”

The Green, a ground-breaking project by Mi7 Developments, will meet exacting environmental standards and aims to be the first student accommodation to achieve a BREEAM “outstanding” rating, the highest award for sustainable building development. Due to open in September 2011, The Green will accommodate more than 1,000 students in 34 town houses and 103 apartments. Exa Networks will install and manage the internet connections in each room, ensuring every student has high speed, secure and reliable web access.

Mohammed Ishtiaq, Managing Director of Mi7 Developments, said: “Exa Networks stood out in a strong field of potential suppliers. They can provide the bespoke products and services which are vital to ensure that the internet services at The Green are of the same outstanding quality as the development’s design and build.”

Exa Networks is a supporter of Positive Bradford, a network of organisations, including businesses and community groups, which aims to promote a positive image of the city.
Jane Vincent, one of the heads of Positive Bradford, said: “It’s great that the development of The Green and the investment in Bradford’s academic sector has spin-offs and benefits for the local economy.

“It’s good to see a local company like Exa Networks winning such a major contract in this substantial regeneration of our city’s learning quarter.”

The Green is part of a wider plan for a £750 million Learning Quarter which also includes a Business Innovations Centre and healthcare facilities. The Green is being delivered by Mi7 Developments, Yorkshire Forward, and the University of Bradford, on behalf of the Hayaat Group in partnership with Welbeck Land Limited.
