Recruitment firm Jackson & Coker continues to provide an online forum for health care executives to share timely insights beneficial to the medical community at large. The current edition of the Jackson & Coker Industry Report spotlights a recent interview with David L. Andrick, Director of Physician Recruitment & Relations at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney, Ohio.

“David’s distinguished career in physician recruitment with several prominent health systems gives him a valuable perspective on the challenges facing health care organizations concerned to attract and retain the best talent among physician candidates,” mentioned Michael Lynch, Senior Business Director with Jackson & Coker, who interviewed David on behalf of the JCIR.

Here are some of the insights David shared concerning the challenges and rewards that in-house recruiters typically experience:

  •      The main challenge is to bring quality physicians into the community who will raise the level of quality of care that patients receive. Physicians want to go where they can really make a difference.
  •     It’s especially rewarding to recruit doctors who are regarded highly by other practitioners who become familiar with their demonstrated clinical skills.
  •     In terms of revenue generation for the hospital or medical group, a recruiter can make an impact by bringing on board even one or two physicians who make an outstanding contribution.
  •     Finding the “right fit” of a provider with the hospital and community he or she serves is critically important.
  •     Another key challenge for recruiters is to differentiate their practice opportunities from all the others made available to candidates through other means.
  •     Competent recruiters can source and present exceptional providers, but doctors recruit doctors and the current staff should always be part of the hiring process.
  •     In terms of physician satisfaction, rural communities sometimes offer unique attributes that appeal to candidates looking for a different work-life balance.
  •     An important word of advice to new recruiters: Find a colleague in the industry that you can relate to and talk to, someone who understands both the frustrations and rewards of mission-critical physician staffing.
