It was exciting and quite educational to interview two charitable foundation directors as part of my intern assignment with Jackson & Coker
Alpharetta, GA (Vocus) October 8, 2009
"It was exciting and quite educational to interview two charitable foundation directors as part of my intern assignment with Jackson & Coker," mentioned Lakshmi Onofri, a marketing intern and cub reporter who gathered information for an article concerning a recent medical mission trip to China for the Jackson & Coker Industry Report http://www.jacksoncoker.com/physician-career-resources/newsletters/default.aspx
During two weeks in August, Jackson Healthcare Charities and the Jackson Family Foundation sponsored a medical brigade to southeastern China to perform surgeries and provide other patient care to residents in medically underserved areas.
"Based on our success in sponsoring similar medical missions to Honduras, we were quite pleased with the results we saw during our recent trip to China," said Chad Jackson, co-director of philanthropy for Jackson Healthcare Charities.
"Our trip was co-sponsored by the Chinese Agape Foundation, a U.S. organization that provides medical relief and manages orphanages and other foster care to Chinese children," he explained. "Knowing the countryside, customs and language of the inhabitants, the Chinese Agape representatives proved to be a highly valuable asset to our medical brigade."
During the two-week visit, doctors, nurses, rehab specialists and other caregivers drawn from the provider pools of Jackson & Coker and other staffing firms associated with Jackson Healthcare performed 82 operations, including 77 cleft palate, cleft lip and open heart surgeries.
"Another objective of our trip was to visit Jackson Family Foundation Christian Care Center," noted Carlyn Jackson, co-director of Jackson Family Foundation. "Our aim in building and staffing this facility is to provide for orphaned children a wholesome living and learning environment that reflects fundamental Christian values," she added.
The Jackson Family Foundation Christian Care Center is slated to be completed by the end of October 2009. The orphanage is located in the area of Zigong, which was hard hit by the Sichuan earthquake in May 2008. When completed, it will house ten to fifteen staff members and 150 children--including orphans as well as children whose parents cannot afford to raise them.
"In interviewing Chad and Carlyn, I was moved by their deep concern to put their personal faith and charitable instincts into concrete action in ways that have longstanding benefit to the underserved communities they reach out to," commented Ms. Onofri. "Their fondness for the Chinese children, in particular, was expressed strongly in their recollection of participating in the medical brigade. To them, it was 'worth it all to see a child smile after a successful facial reconstructive surgery,'" she recounted.
Jackson Healthcare Charities has been involved with the Chinese Agape Foundation for more than four years. The organizations plan to co-sponsor additional medical mission trips to China in the future.
Jackson Healthcare has created a website--http://www.MedicalMissions.org --to promote medical volunteerism around the globe. The website enables religious or secular health-focused organizations to connect with physicians, nurses, rehab specialists and other caregivers who wish to volunteer their medical services to underserved communities around the globe.
