Things were just beginning to settle when Google let loose once more with another algorithmic update, this time dubbed ‘Penguin’. The Web community reeled yet again as the search engine doled out penalty to both the guilty and the unwitting. Keeping on their toes, website owners adjust to the latest updates. In face of the situation, SEOPartner’s most recent newsletter had owner and online marketing authority James Schramko explaining the implications of Penguin and issuing advice on how to cope with it.
“First of all, we need to remember that when they release new changes in the algorithms, it can quite often unsettle things,” states Schramko in the recent newsletter video. According to him, people wonder why their sites have been affected causing them to seek understanding, prompting the expert to give this advice: “Just let it settle. Let things adjust until they make revisons and changes.”
Schramko also mentions that the Google Penguin algorithm update indicates that good SEO is still okay. “They’re really trying to hunt down sites that rank better than they deserve,” he observes. “What they really want is to have the most effective sites out there and they believe that it’s still alright to do SEO, but you want to be doing the right SEO,” the SEOPartner chief qualifies. “The goal is of course to reward high quality sites.”
The news update also provides instruction on what to do with backlink anchor text. “Backlinks are so powerful that that’s why Google’s trying to stop people who manipulate them,” Schramko shares. One way to improve search results is to get social media sites naturally linking to your site.” Getting social links is an effective way to balance a site’s profile.
“You also want to make sure that you’re not just your hitting your site with one particular anchor text,” he warns. “If you keep using the same anchor text, you’re probably going to get an over optimization penalty or an OOP.”
Schramko also highlights the importance of keeping a website with fresh themed content. “More importantly now than ever you want to keep your sites themed,” he asserts, instructing website owners to choose a topic and to stick to it, making sure that it’s relevant and that any links on the site pointing to other sites are related to the topic of the site. “That’s what we do when we place the content for you,” he continues, describing one aspect of the SEOPartner service. “We go and look for theme sites to use that we can place your content on.”
He also suggests logging in to Webmaster Tools to make sure that a website account is in good order. Through it, website owners can check for errors, find out which keywords their sites rank for and that people search with, see if there are any warning messages about bad links, etc.
