'It is a tragic, complex, yet uplifting story of adventure and love,' Petken says. 'It also has a very powerful antagonist, who brings some great drama to this very original tale.'

Exploring the human spirit and its ability to survive, “Mercy Carver: Dark Shadows” (published by AuthorHouse UK) by author Jana Petken describes a time when freedom was a distant dream for those enslaved in the U.S.

Set in Virginia, just before the state seceded from the Union, this historical fiction tells the story of Mercy, a woman from London who is abducted and sold into slavery despite being white. When she escapes, she joins an organization to help runaway slaves reach freedom. During this time, she falls in love with Jacob Stone, a compassionate man who is also deeply in love with Mercy. There is a problem, though – Jacob is a slave owner enlisted in the Confederate army.

“It is a tragic, complex, yet uplifting story of adventure and love,” Petken says. “It also has a very powerful antagonist, who brings some great drama to this very original tale.”

An excerpt from “Mercy Carver”:

“Another theory flashed into Mercy’s mind. She stood thinking about it whilst looking at the other girls. She believed because of their attire that they were going to be sold into slavery. Was it possible? She kept asking herself – slavery? She’d heard that slavery was for black people and those convicted of crimes and sent to Australia on prison ships. She had never seen a black man. Did slavery still exist?”
