A doctor embarks on a quest against violence, corruption and greed that takes her from posh, Caribbean resorts to the depths of the Venezuelan jungles in Jan Smolders’ latest novel, “Ripping the Veil” (published by iUniverse).
“The Dominican Republic has anti-discrimination laws for HIV/AIDS but they are poorly enforced,” Smolders writes, explaining the inspiration for the book. “This opens the gates for major corruption.”
“Ripping the Veil” follows a group of physicians in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela who have decided to capitalize on the widespread discrimination against those with HIV and AIDS by setting up a Mafia-type organization. The doctors’ group guarantees privacy and provides first-class, discreet treatment for wealthy HIV/AIDS patients in exchange for exorbitant fees.
When the group kills a patient who threatens to expose their practices, a courageous doctor named Silvia springs into action to locate the culprits and take their entire system down. Scenes of thrilling action, escapes and fights take place against the backdrop of Venezuelan jungles and the city of Santo Domingo as Silvia works to protect the population of ailing, sick outcasts unable to defend themselves.
