Aereo is a small competitor, which is starting a rapid rollout across the USA delivering TV in competition with cable television companies at a lower cost, according to the Associated Press on June 27.

Industry analyst Jeff Kagan offers comment on this story.

“Aereo is a startup company that is challenging traditional satellite and cable television services with low cost options. It uses the Internet, antenna and more to deliver programming. It offers packages at $8 per month over the Internet, which is an incredibly low cost option. This could be very attractive to a slice of the consumer pie,” says Tech analyst Kagan.

Aereo let’s users watch television on a variety of devices like the TV, laptop, tablet and smartphone. Aereo uses a unique system to deliver signal to your devices at a reduced price.

“Aereo is getting lots of push back from traditional providers of television like cable TV companies, but this small company is pushing ahead with it’s innovative approach. How successful will Aereo become? That’s hard to say at this early stage. They have the potential to become successful and really transform at least one segment of the industry because of their innovation and their low price,” says analyst Kagan.

“We’ll just have to keep our eyes on them and see if they become an important part of the competitive landscape. Today the traditional providers see Aereo as a tiny nat flying around their eyes, but if that nat rapidly grows it could cause real competitive trouble for the traditional industry,” says Kagan.

“The traditional cable television industry is broken. Prices keep rising year after year. The industry seems to have no desire to change and update. They push back on new ideas that will cut customer costs like a la carte pricing and now Aereo. The industry is backing itself into a corner and something is bound to happen that will change and transform it. Is Aereo part of that wave of change? Don’t know yet, so let’s keep our eyes on them and see what happens,” says Kagan.
