Sony is focused on rebuilding Sony, says CEO Kazuo Hirai in this Time article on May 29 at the D Conference with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher in San Francisco.
Principal analyst Jeff Kagan offers comment on this story.
“This was a very interesting conversation about the future for Sony. If they are successful, Sony will rebuild their brand and succeed once again like they did in the 1990’s. Will they?” asks Wireless anayst Jeff Kagan.
“Sony was at the top of their game a decade or two ago. Then the industry moved ahead without them and they were left behind in the dust. Sony is involved with many different industries like wireless smartphones, computers, PlayStation 4, entertainment and much more. They are focused on turning around their electronics business. I am glad to hear the senior executives say they cannot do this alone,” says Analyst Kagan.
“So what will Sony look like going forward? They seem to have an understanding of what they need to do. Now we just watch and see if they can do it. They have to rebuild the technology and refresh the tired Sony brand. They also need to be able to create a new sector or two, just like Apple did with the iPod in the 1990’s, then the iPhone, and iPad. Actually that’s what Apple needs to do once again as well,” Says Kagan.
“Can Sony reinvent and redefine themselves to the market, customers and investors? They can do it. They seem to have an understanding of the problem. Now they just have to make it happen. We’ll have to keep our eyes on Sony going forward for their technology and their brand,” says Kagan.
