Texas Computer Cooperative Reduces JES2 Printing Costs, Improves Service

H&W Computer Systems, Inc. today released a case study that details how the Texas Computer Cooperative (TCC) used H&W's JES2Web software to reduce JES2 printing costs and provide browser access to the JES2 input queue.

H&W Computer Systems, Inc. today released a case study that details how the Texas Computer Cooperative (TCC) used H&W's JES2Web software to reduce JES2 printing costs and provide browser access to the JES2 input queue. The TCC is a consortium of regional, nonregulatory education service centers in the state of Texas. Education Service Center, Region 20 in San Antonio is one of these centers, which assist school districts within their regions in improving student performance and increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of school operations.

After an extensive search, the TCC chose JES2Web because it successfully addressed the company's specific requirements. The requirements consisted of the ability to create PDF versions of JES2 reports, to have a browser-based interface, to allow users to monitor the JES2 queue, to allow users to print without a 3270 connection, and to provide secure report viewing.

"Of the five requirements that we had, JES2Web answered every one," said Hugh Rayburn, Systems Programmer II at Region 20.

Allowing users to create PDF versions of JES2 reports using JES2Web proved significant to TCC in giving users more flexibility in finding data within reports and reducing printing. Rather than printing an entire report, district staff and administrators can now print only the pages they need, reducing waste.

"In the old days they could pull a report up, and they would have to literally search through the whole report to get to a section they wanted," said Alfred Ovalle, Senior Systems Programmer at Region 20. "With PDF format, they can do a search on a key word and get there immediately and print what they need, which makes it a lot easier."

Also with JES2Web, district staff and administrators can now see their print jobs in the JES2 queue, see which jobs are ahead of theirs, and know that their jobs were submitted and will execute and print.

"They can see in their particular initiator what jobs are running and if something is taking a long time," said Pat Nickle, Coordinator III for Business Consulting Services at Region 20. "That's very helpful to them so they'll know their job is there, and they've got ten in front of them, so it will take a little bit longer to run."

Before implementing JES2Web, district staff and administrators couldn't see what was holding up their jobs. When this happened, they often submitted the same job multiple times, which adversely affected system utilization and performance.

"We could have three or four or five submissions of the same job just because users didn't have that input queue to look in," said Wayne Parker, Component Director of Systems & Operations for Information Systems at Region 20. "If you have hundreds of users doing that, you could see how that could potentially impact the system's performance."
