John Hancock's Signature Symbolizes Freedom for New York Handwriting Expert
To one New York ex-teacher turned Handwriting Expert, National Handwriting Week is not just synonymous with John Hancock's autograph, it's a reminder of the American Freedom to be self-employed and solve crimes… a slave to teaching high school kids no more.
New York, NY (PRWEB) January 12, 2007 -- National Handwriting Week (Jan 21st-27th) is a week meant for people to recognize the importance of handwriting as symbolized by the most famous American signature of them all: The original John Hancock. But, to Bob Baier, a New York ex-teacher, it's the more important element of being an American: Freedom.
Bob remembers living the "hard" American dream of working long days and nights to put some money away for his kid's college. Now, thanks to the increase in people forging other people's "John Hancock's", he has the freedom self-employment brings.
On this special day, he is grateful because he no longer has to work 2 or 3 jobs, commute 2 hours each day, or struggle to pay his bills. He does admit that having two kids in college (Michael - son age 21 and Briana- daughter age 18), is a drain on any budget. He laughs when he reveals the irony of it all, "I guess without the dramatic increase in forgeries, criminals, and relatives trying to steal other relative's money/property … I might still be teaching. Freedom also means the freedom to get commit a crime and get caught!"
Bob Baier has made long strides from his high school teaching days. Just last July in the midst of the Jon Benet Ramsey / John Marc Karr news blitz, Bob was the featured handwriting expert on the TV Show Inside Edition and was invited on Larry King Live, Fox Five News and CNN (NY). Plus, he continues to get cases nationwide which require him to testify in court.
"Before, I never considered John Hancock's Birthday a special day. But now, it represents the science of handwriting and forensic document examination - which is my second career. Hancock's signature makes me appreciate this country and the freedom it offers. Who grows up wanting to be a "forensic handwriting expert"? But, in America, you can be whatever you want. Plus, it pays a heck of lot better than teaching and I get to help people who have been victims of forgeries.
When John Hancock picked up a quill pen in the summer of 1776 to sign the Declaration of Independence, he reportedly boasted that he would "sign it in letters bold enough so the king of England can see it without his spectacles." John Hancock's flamboyant signature on the Declaration of Independence made him an American legend and made his name synonymous with signature.
Although the authenticity of John Hancock's Birthday has never been questioned, his actual date of birth has been a subject of debate. Historians argue between January 12th, 1737 and January 23rd, 1737.
Bob's title has many names; Handwriting Expert, Forgery Expert, or Forensic Document Examiner. He spends his days helping people and attorneys with their problems concerning forged wills, deeds, contracts, checks etc. Bob Baier now works from home but travels throughout the United States to testify in court regarding document examining/forgery cases as needed.
When Bob first heard that handwriting experts/document examiners earn over $1000 per day to testify in court and often $100 per hour for laboratory research he jumped at the opportunity. He discovered there was a desperate need for court-qualified handwriting experts nationwide and that in some states not even one document examiner existed. He immediately enrolled into the two-year distance learning and apprenticeship program to learn how to detect forgeries and build a career. Bob the teacher had once again become the student.
Statistics about the aging baby boomers point to the biggest ownership change of land and property the United States has ever seen. "That means more fraud, faked wills, and forged paperwork after the grandparents/parents have passed. It's really sad what people will do to their own kin." says Bart Baggett, president of The School of Forensic Document Examination - the only non-government institute offering a 2-year program in document examination.
Bob's love for teaching has led him back to teach part time at his Alma matter, The School of Forensic Document Examination. His students are no longer high school age; they are working adults attending a one-hour telephone class. They are hoping to follow in his footsteps.
