“The book is a series of vignettes of what Army life was like for these gentle trained killers during this time period as they serve their twin Gods – science and the military – with dignity, wit and nerve.”

Joseph N. Manfredo’s book “The Trained Killers” (published by Trafford Publishing) is an eye-opening account of his time in the U.S. Army’s research and development program during some of the tensest years of the Cold War.

“The Trained Killers,” which has been selected for Trafford’s Gold Seal program – a program recognizing excellence in writing and overall potential – will be appearing at the 2014 California Library Association’s annual conference in Oakland, held Nov. 7-9.

Set in Fort Dix, New Jersey just after the Korean War ends, “The Trained Killers” centers on Manfredo and a group of young engineers drafted into the U.S. Army. After basic training, Manfredo and his friends are moved to a laboratory in Maryland.

Work at the laboratory is more than just research on rockets and explosions – the military leaders believe Manfredo should be doing more soldierly duties and assign him and his friends to work in mess halls, guard prisons and march in parades, which they handle with pride and a touch of humor.

Manfredo says, “The book is a series of vignettes of what Army life was like for these gentle trained killers during this time period as they serve their twin Gods – science and the military – with dignity, wit and nerve.”
