Kacey Bytheway Runs for a Good Cause

A week after winning first place in the 11th annual St. Jude Children's Hospital Marathon & Half-Marathon, Kacey Bytheway, a University of Miami cross-country runner, participated in the Greater Manchester Marathon April 29 to show support to her mother who defeated breast cancer.

Kacey Bytheway, 21, from Miami, Florida, recently participated in her first-ever marathon as part of St. Jude Children's Hospital’s running event. Following her first-place win, the young athlete decided to continue running and registered to participate in the Greater Manchester Marathon that took place April 29 in Longford Park in Stretford, England.

The Greater Manchester Marathon is to help support people living with breast cancer, one such individual was Kacey Bytheway’s mother.

“My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly two years ago, since then she has survived a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery,” said Kacey Bytheway. “I ran the event in show of support.”

Kacey Bytheway is a University of Miami psychology student, she is a junior on the university’s cross-country team and most recently she won first place in her first-ever marathon. Following the marathon, Kacey Bytheway and several other cross-country teammates packed their bags and decided to vacation in England. Upon arrival, Kacey Bytheway overheard a couple speaking about the Greater Manchester Marathon and immediately Kacey Bytheway registered to participate.

“Kacey Bytheway is a bit crazy, less than a week ago she ran a marathon, and immediately she wanted to run another,” said Ron Lile, Kacey Bytheway’s friend.

Kacey Bytheway ran the event in 2 hours, 35 minutes, 47 seconds, she came in third place. Another University of Miami cross-country team member, Rachel Green, participated as well and came in fifth.

“Kacey Bytheway was pumped, she was very proud to wear the pink ribbon and show support for everything her mother endured, it was really nice to watch her,” said Green, 20.

Kacey Bytheway is continuing to vacation in England, she returns to Miami, Florida, next Sunday. She plans to continue running marathons and hopes to improve her time.
