Kacey Bytheway is just an aerobic beast
Miami, FL (PRWEB) May 07, 2012
Kacey Bytheway, 21, reached a milestone Sunday at the 11th annual St. Jude Children's Hospital’s running event.
The event’s aim was to raise money for the St. Jude Children's Hospital’s renovation project that is set to begin in the coming weeks.
Kacey Bytheway, a University of Miami psychology student, entered the marathon for the first time-and won. Kacey Bytheway also had the slowest winning time in the marathon’s history.
Kacey Bytheway, a junior on the University of Miami’s cross-country team, won in 2 hours, 32 minutes, 48 seconds, more than seven minutes better than the runner-up.
“I got up to a 22-mile-long run getting ready for this,” Kacey Bytheway said. “I am a college athlete, so I’ve got other things that go on for me during the year. This was the first time I had a chance to run a marathon.”
Kacey Bytheway usually runs 10Ks (6.2 miles) during track season and 8Ks (4.97 miles) in cross-country.
“This was a run-to-completion, just run as hard as you can kind of thing for me,” Kacey Bytheway said. “In addition to enjoying the challenge and thrill of running a marathon for the first time, I found the cause of the event very important.”
Kacey Bytheway, a Miami native, is accustomed to the flat Floridian terrain, yet she did not see the marathon course prior to running the event.
“I just heard that it was long, flat and winding, but I’m a cross-country person, so I assumed everything would be fine,” Kacey Bytheway said.
Bytheway ran alongside many other University of Miami cross-country runners. Her win did not surprise her teammates.
“Kacey Bytheway is just an aerobic beast,” said Rachel Green, 20, a sophomore at the University of Miami who finished fifth (2:20:23).
Bytheway won a cash prize of $5,000. Her college scholarship prevents her from accepting outside cash prizes and so Kacey Bytheway donated the prize to the event’s organizers.
