Military Visitors Rank High in the Hawaiian Islands
In peak season, the demand for Hawaii beach accommodations outstrips supply, but outside of peak season the military keeps the travel industry in business. Hawaiian Beach Rentals, a Hawaiian company specializing in vacation rentals, says the recent deployments have made military related travel more prevalent than ever. With nearly 1 out of 4 Hawaiians employed by the military, it's big business. They work on the bases, in key intelligence positions around the islands and in the military support facilities scattered throughout the islands, just to name a few. Military personnel and their families represent more than ten percent of Hawaii's population which brings in billions of economic activity to the island and are the state's largest employer.
(PRWEB) July 26, 2007 -- In peak season, the demand for Hawaii beach accommodations outstrips supply, but outside of peak season the military keeps the travel industry in business. Military personnel and their families represent more than ten percent of Hawaii's population which brings in billions of economic activity to the island. You would be correct if you guessed that the armed forces are the largest civilian employer in the state.
According to Charles Koehl of Hawaiian Beach Rentals, "this represents a very large population of tourists to the islands as well. Not only is the island a magnet for military tourism, it is also a magnet for visitors to those people both supporting the military and those in the military here on the islands. The visiting families and friends are thrilled to celebrate a homecoming in an ocean front Kailua rental. "
There is an opportunity for all in the tourist trade to catch the wave of this steady stream of visitors to the islands. Since the military doesn't base their schedules on typical vacation timetables there is a steady flow of tourist, both military and those visiting military, throughout the year. For instance, when ships return from the Mid East, they do so when their tour is over, not when they think it is a good time to travel Hawaii. When these ships arrive there are often family and friends of those returning on the ships waiting on shore.
With so much military activity in the Pacific, Hawaii is the likely recreational paradise for family and friends of those serving. Since statistics aren't kept by the Department of Defense on how many military personnel spend vacation time on the islands, it is hard to put a specific number on those vacationing here. However, suffice it to say that tens of millions in revenue are brought in due to these vacationers.
In 2001 the Army alone employed over 28,000 personnel and was the largest source of military employment in Hawaii. Employment by the Navy and Marine Corps accounted for about 38% of military hires and Air Force employed almost 10,000 people or 15% of military personnel. Other defense activities accounted for the remaining 1,000 military jobs in the state. With the rising activity in the Far East, this has been steadily increasing and new facilities are being built in Oahu to house intelligence operations. These will replace WWII era facilities.
Even though there are military only facilities such as those at Kaneohe Bay and Kilauea Military Camp there are many opportunities to cash in on those coming to the islands for a little R&R and those already here that just want to get away on their days off. Being based in Hawaii allows for exploring the islands or spending a relaxing weekend renting Kihei homes. One way is to see them is to scuba dive and see the vast array of wildlife in the oceans. If you're more a land lubber, then hiking the various volcanoes offers an opportunity unlike any in the world to see the variety of flora, fauna and wildlife near an active or inactive volcano. There are too many to list but a few more would include golfing, sailing, kayaking or just hanging out on some of the most pristine beaches in the world. Whatever you desire for a tropical vacation, Hawaii offers it all to those who are proudly serving or those who are their friends and family.
