Tragically, the careless or intentional mistreatment of nursing home residents continues to be a problem that impacts individuals and families across our state.

The Kentucky nursing home abuse and neglect law firm of Hughes & Coleman Injury Lawyers has added more information, including an expanded video library, to the website it has established to assist elderly abuse and neglect victims and their families.

The website,, also features a new design that makes it easy to navigate through the site’s variety of resources, such as a regularly updated blog that discusses the latest news and legal trends in the area of nursing home abuse and neglect.

Lee Coleman, an experienced Kentucky injury lawyer and co-founder of the law firm, pointed out that, according to the state Cabinet for Health and Family Services’ annual report, the Kentucky Department of Community Based Services received 13,491 reports of suspected abuse of individuals over age 60 in fiscal year 2010 – the most complaints it had received since it began reporting data in 2006.

“Tragically, the careless or intentional mistreatment of nursing home residents continues to be a problem that impacts individuals and families across our state,” Coleman said. “Our role as attorneys is to serve as advocates on behalf of these victims, and we believe our website is a part of that role.

“If you are a victim of abuse or neglect, or if you suspect a loved one has been victimized by another’s misconduct, we hope you can turn to our website for helpful information about your legal rights and options.”

As part of the site’s redesign, video has been added that discusses the firm’s past involvement with nursing home negligence victims. Also, video accompanies several attorney profiles.

“We want visitors to know that we are speaking from experience,” Coleman said. “We also want them to know more about us and what motivates us as attorneys to focus on this challenging area of the law.”

Additionally, the site features information on:

  •     Kentucky’s “epidemic” of nursing home abuse and neglect, including reports of incidents that have occurred in recent years
  •     Typical signs and symptoms of nursing home abuse and neglect
  •     A step-by-step guide on how to file a suspected abuse or neglect claim
  •     A review of the law relevant to nursing home abuse and neglect, including a summary of compensation that may be available to victims and families through personal injury or wrongful death actions.

“We hope that the site’s visitors understand that collecting information is just the first step on the path to legal relief,” Coleman said. “It’s important to act on what you learn and to contact an experienced lawyer who can review the specific facts and circumstances of your case.”
