It’s getting harder and harder to differentiate from one ecommerce site to the next, and in response to the increased competition, Modern Tots has announced that its strategy for 2013 would be to include more exclusive products in its store.
According to Carmen, the online kids furniture and toy store’s manager, “We are a niche store that’s dedicated to style and quality kids furniture, but we compete with some of the biggest stores on the net. So, if we are carrying all the same products that they carry, then the reason for shopping with us is less compelling for the consumer. We feel like we have an eye for design and plan to use that to develop and produce a line of kids furniture that will draw a new clientele to Modern Tots.”
Modern Tots was founded in 2009 as an online store that is focused on a curated collection of modern and design oriented kids furniture and toys. They have developed a reputation for high quality and innovative products over the last four years. Developing an exclusive line of kids furniture poses a significant risk to that reputation if the quality and style doesn't live up to what their customers are used to seeing and receiving. Their first foray into the exclusive design was a train table that is proving to be quite popular for the store.
According to Modern Tots, the new play table was one of their best sellers over the recent holiday season, even though it was only released a few weeks before Christmas, and it hasn't slowed down in January. Moderntots.com says that the they had been looking for a play table that met their standards when they discovered that most train tables on the market were made with inferior materials and none seemed to be made with non-toxic materials. They say that their table is made so that the table is much more durable by using thicker legs where most tables use a thin and flimsy material. They are also using a water-based and non-toxic finish, which they say provides a much safer product for children over the long run.
