Kidnexions and MilitarySaves.org announced a partnership last week to offer parents free tools to help teach kids how to save and spend wisely. The tools, called KidsMoneyConnections, cover the areas of allowance, saving, budgeting, earning, and investing and come with downloadable activities to help parents get their kids actively involved in developing good money management skills.
"Kids love to act grown-up and they have a natural interest in things money-related. If we can tap into these interests and teach kids wise money habits, they'll be better prepared to take on the financial challenges that await them in adulthood," says Karyn Hodgens, co-founder of Kidnexions and creator of KidsMoneyConnexions.
According to a recent survey by Charles Schwab (Young Adults and Money, March, 2009) most young adults, ages 23 - 28, don't feel adequately prepared to make good financial choices when it comes to using debt wisely, saving for the future, or investing money. 45% indicated they wish they had learned more about personal finance and living within a budget before entering the work force. And almost as many (42%) wish they had learned more about saving.
"Most kids learn about managing money from their parents and most of what they learn comes simply from observation," says Hodgens. "Parents want their kids to learn good money habits but often aren't sure where, when, or how to start teaching them. KidsMoneyConnexions can help be the guide parents are looking for."
Along with KidsMoneyConnexions, Military Youth Saves will post Kidnexion's monthly Teachable Moments, little anecdotes about teaching kids money in the context of their everyday lives. These can be read at: http://www.militarysaves.org/resourcekit/SaverParents.asp
Kidnexions (kid·neck·shuns) was founded on the idea that kids learn best when engaged in interesting and relevant activities that are connected to their everyday lives. Their goal is to build on kids' interests by providing opportunities for them to develop real-world skills through fun, motivating, and meaningful activities. Kidnexions produces a kids' savings and money management software program called KidsSave.
