Kids Aid launches its first-ever website, http://www.KidsAidColorado.org, today in hopes of making it even easier to learn about and donate to the organization.

Kids Aid is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing for the needs of children, with a primary focus on supplying food to hungry kids. In collaboration with Mesa County School District 51, the Backpack Program sends food donations home with children who otherwise would go hungry over the weekend.

After becoming aware of the organization this winter, Ryan, Sawyer & Whitney (RSW), a Grand Junction-based marketing communications firm, approached Kids Aid in hopes of helping with donations through the development of a comprehensive website.

“We were astonished by the number of children Kids Aid assists,” President Tom Y. Sawyer said. “Ryan, Sawyer & Whitney wanted to help, and we hope having the website will boost donations and the number of children the organization can reach.”

Currently Mesa County School District 51 has identified 388 families with children in school that are currently homeless. There are 181 homeless children in schools that Kids Aid serves, and 141 of those are receiving backpacks.

The children most likely to go without food on weekends are the 41 percent of students in the school district (9,749 children) who are eligible for free and reduced lunches.

Kids Aid is currently serving 1,260 students in 17 schools. There are 13 schools currently unserved by the program because of lack of funds and volunteers.

Kids Aid estimates the need for the entire school district is 2,000 backpacks a week.
