Online science education retailer Owl Brand Discovery Kits enriches Missouri teacher and at-risk programs.

Barn owl pellets are an affordable and popular alternative to traditional science education.

We were declared an at risk district due to financial reasons.  Over the last several years, we have come out of that status, but have not been able to spend money on items like this.

Summer education programs provide opportunities for kids to learn outside the traditional classroom, often in natural environments that bring what they’ve learned in a classroom to life in new and exciting ways. Many are able to look back on their formative years and recall things they learned about science and ecology as a direct result of teachers providing hands on learning experiences in natural settings. Unfortunately, these programs are getting more difficult to maintain in many regions due to diminishing resources.

In response, online retailer Owl Brand Discovery Kits developed a program in 2010 that awards products to schools in need of additional materials for science classes. The Kidwings Finding Funding for Teachers is an application based grant program that allows teachers to seek high quality materials for use in their classrooms free of charge. OBDK provides products to selected schools in part to promote their products, but to also give back to the public and private educational organizations that support the company.

Waverly, Missouri's Santa Fe Elementary Summer Enrichment program was a recent recipient of the Kidwings Finding Funding Grant. Teacher Tammy Zumalt explained, “We were declared an at risk district due to financial reasons. Over the last several years, we have come out of that status, but have not been able to spend money on items like this to help enhance our curriculum.”

Ms. Zumalt has previously used pellets from Owl Brand Discover Kits and had this to say about her experience, “This was the best unit I taught in science over 10 years. The students were awed by what they found in the owl pellets. They were amazed by the multiple contents found in each one and how many items could fit into an owl pellet as well as how the owls coughed them up. The students learned a great deal about owls as well as the food chain.” She goes on to state that this donation of owl pellets “is a great contribution to the two days we have scheduled for as The Great Outdoors. It is an excellent opportunity for our students to see the food cycle at its best while studying the great outdoors.”
