(PRWEB) May 24, 2009 -- Dr. Ian Clarke, medical researcher and founder of the Peterson Tribology Laboratory at Loma Linda University, has had a research career involving the wear phenomena of joint replacement bearings. He has joined the BoneSmart.org global consumer awareness campaign to help improve access to information for candidates for hip replacement and knee replacement surgery.

Global Consumer Awareness of Joint Replacement Options
Global Consumer Awareness of Joint Replacement Options

By providing insight into traditional and alternative materials used in modern joint replacement surgery, the BoneSmart® campaign empowers patients to learn about the options available to them for knee replacement or hip replacement surgery, and to initiate informed discussions about their options with their surgeons.

In his research, Dr. Clarke studies the wear performance of hip and knee joints using special joint-simulation machines. The materials he studies are at the cutting edge of today's technology, including the latest polyethylene, ceramic and metal alloys for hip and knee joints. The results of his studies provide surgeons and patients alike with information that they can use to choose the right materials.

He believes that timely information about current issues and latest technologies is essential to joint replacement consumers, and that the BoneSmart® campaign helps achieve this aim. The Bonesmart website is continually updated and has easily accessible information on its website - including a moderated, online forum for joint replacement candidates and post-operative patients.

Dr. Clarke's partnership with BoneSmart.org, he says, is a "natural extension" of the mission statement of worldwide surgeons and health professionals.

"Our mission statement for 13 years has been to perform the best research in hip and knee joints and to publish our studies worldwide to surgeons and health professionals. This we have done in many professional journals. However we have not reached out to patients except by educational materials to their surgeons. With BoneSmart.org's technology and vision, patient access becomes a natural extension of our mission statement."

Dr. Ian C. Clark will be contributing to the BoneSmart.org campaign through his biomaterials expertise, attention to hip replacement and knee replacement articles published by the campaign and his involvement in the presentation of biomaterials on the website.
