Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) June 3, 2009
Konsultek revealed the results of their 2009 Pulse of the Industry Survey today. The data, compiled from responses of 1,845 IT professionals show the most pressing concerns in the areas of information security and network infrastructure to be Cyber Crime/Data Loss Prevention and Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery (BCDR) respectively.
According to a 2006 FBI report, cyber crime costs US companies $67 Billion annually. Cyber crime continues to increase even though much of it still goes unreported. Just as the Wild West era was a haven for criminal behavior, the internet has become the new version of the Wild West.
The survey results show that cyber crime and data loss prevention remain of paramount importance to those professionals tasked with information security. This is again consistent with a Cyber Crime Watchdog report of increased trouble. According to this report and a recent article in the Wall Street Journal cyber crime was up 33% in 2008 and rose another 50% by the end of March 2009. This is consistent with what Konsultek is seeing with their clients as well.
Mike Tilkian, VP of Sales and Marketing at Konsultek, noted "The economic slowdown has not included professional cyber criminals and has created an environment where some former employees feel they have been wronged and are looking for ways to express their displeasure. This makes it more important than ever for businesses of all sizes to take a critical look at their information security and network infrastructure capabilities."
Commenting on the network infrastructure responses Judith Buckardt, President of Konsultek, remarked "The results make it clear that Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery (BCDR) is at the top of many IT professionals' worry list in 2009." 44% of the respondents pointed to BCDR as their most important concern, citing reasons that ranged from component level failures making compliance difficult to catastrophic disasters putting entire networks at risk.
These concerns are consistent with the rising cost associated with network outages. A credit card authorization system for a large retail chain going down can easily cost $6,450,000 an hour as shown in a study by Dave Patterson at the University of California, Berkeley.
