Krav Maga Classes are renowned for their straight forward approach and physicality, but in Westchester County, Somers based Krav Maga New York recently added classes to remind practitioners that the first and best line of defense is verbal.

The benefits gained from defensive training transcend the application of it, and are not easy to enumerate, explained or understand. But self defense only teaches us how to defend ourselves, it rarely teaches us when.

Krav Maga classes are not known for developing skills in diplomacy. Instead, this defensive approach, recognized as one of the most effective systems of defensive training available today, is deployed when necessary at the earliest possible stage, and though appropriately, forcefully. It’s the kind of training one would needs should there be no diplomacy option, or if diplomacy failed. But Krav Maga New York, a nationally recognized training center located in Westchester reminds practitioners that confrontations rarely start with punches and kicks, but rather escalate from verbal.

The company introduced adult verbal defense training in January. New week long classes have recently been added to benefit area residents.

“I’ve been involved in Martial Arts and force training for many years,” says Krav Maga New York’s Chief Instructor Davide G., “The benefits gained from defensive training transcend the application of it, and are not easy to enumerate, explained or understand. But self defense,” Davide goes on to explain, “only teaches us how to defend ourselves, it rarely teaches us when.”

Krav Maga classes in Westchester offer authentic, Black Belt level Krav Maga, but as of January 2013, separate classes have been added to also teach verbal redirection and de-escalation, and concepts like representation, a practitioner’s responsibility to the bystanders (the witnesses), ethical intervention, the dangers of repetition, and when action is not only justified, but a moral obligation.

Micaela, a 16 year old Krav Maga New York practitioner who recently received training in Verbal Self Defense, explained that Krav Maga training has given her the skill set she feels she needs to defend herself, but until her recent training in Verbal Self Defense, she didn’t realize that repeating herself excessively, for example, is unacceptable - a huge red flag that demands immediate action. “It doesn’t mean I’m going to kick someone”, Micaela explained, “but it does mean that I have to take action, like demanding that a bystander help me, or something else, but whatever it is it must happen now.”

Krav Maga New York recently taught Verbal Self defense to Salem High School Peer Leaders and is scheduled to run a daylong training session for Westchester County Department of Social Services.

Last month the company announced that as part of a continued community outreach effort, week long Verbal Self Defense classes will take place the last full week of every calendar quarter.
