It's showing everyone else what can be achieved with some serious tech and a great eye for design

IT247, one of the leading online suppliers of top-end technology, has added the LaCie Hard Drive range to its extensive selection of premium desktop add-ons. With the emphasis on form as well as function, this smart new external hard drive is the result of a collaboration between LaCie and renowned designer Philippe Starck.
Touch sensitive technology
Always determined to push the boundaries of technology, LaCie has incorporated a ground-breaking Intelligent Touch-Sensitive surface that responds to the user’s touch. It enables the user to customise the hard drive, opening the application of choice depending on whether a short tap or a long touch is used. “It’s showing everyone else what can be achieved with some serious tech and a great eye for design,” says Daniel Tranter, Product Category Manager of IT247. “We believe that our customers will love the ease and convenience of the touch-sensitive feature, as well as the real power behind this hard drive, its sheer simplicity,” he adds.
The LaCie Starck comes with a versatile USB 2.0 interface as standard, meaning that it can be used for both PC and Mac. As well as the set-up assistant designed to help users format the drive quickly and easily, it also comes with Desktop management software that allows the user to customise the touch-sensitive surface, and Backup assistant software. The drive also comes with Intego Backup Assistant for the Mac, making it one of the best universal external hard drives on the market. With 2TB of memory, there’s more than enough storage space in the unit for almost any requirements. The desktop version supports Microsoft Windows 7, Apple MacOS X 10.4 or later, and Microsoft Windows Vista / XP operating systems.
A design classic in the making
But it’s not just about usability. The LaCie has been designed with aesthetics at the forefront of the brief, and Philippe Starck has managed to combine functionality with a form that could make this a design classic. Encased in a 3mm aluminium shell, the smooth, elegant lines of the hard drive would look good on any desk. The casing also provides it with shock resistance and protects the hard drive from overheating, again emphasising the combination of form and function. Subtle LEDs glow green or orange to indicate the activity the hard drive is engaged in, enabling users to tell at a glance what their tech is up to.
“Philippe Starck has excelled the brief he was originally given, and we believe it sets a benchmark for desktop add-ons,” says Daniel of IT247. “We predict that this elegant and useful tool is going to be a big seller with our customers, who have come to expect nothing less than the very best from us. With the LaCie Starck, we believe we’re meeting those expectations,” he concludes.
