Our experience has taught us that many of those who have committed these crimes do not rehabilitate within the prison system but through alternative sentencing programs designed to address the root of their problems.
Laguna Beach, California (PRWEB) February 08, 2013
According to the recently released Laguna Beach Police annual crime and activity report, violent crime has decreased by 21% when compared to the previous five year average. MacGregor & Collins criminal attorneys feel that the city’s increased willingness to rehabilitate offenders, rather than incarcerate them, may be a contributing factor that has led to these positive results.
According to the report, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, narcotics crimes, and weapons crimes all experienced a noticeable decrease when compared to the previous 5-year average. Laguna Beach aggravated assaults fell by 23.6 percent, with only 42 violations having been reported for the entirety of 2012.
Although the majority of crime decreased, public intoxication arrests increased from 231 in 2011 to 277 in 2012. Some feel that changing the way the city addresses public intoxication and DUI related incidences may help curb the problem. Randy Collins, criminal defense lawyer, believes that the city-wide decrease in overall crime could be partially attributed to the city’s willingness to rehabilitate violent crime offenders.
“Having worked with several Laguna Beach locals faced with serious and minor charges, we have seen the city’s wavering stance when faced with prosecuting those accused for robbery, assault, and other offenses. Our experience has taught us that many of those who have committed these crimes do not rehabilitate within the prison system but through alternative sentencing programs designed to address the root of their problems.
“We sympathize with those who have been victimized by these types of offenses and understand why victims would want those responsible sent to prison for extended periods of time, but if the goal is to rid our streets of violent crimes it is very possible that extended incarceration is not the answer,” said Attorney Collins.
Major instances of violent crimes noted in the 2012 Laguna Beach police report include an October 30th shooting in which a man shot and killed his dog and sleeping wife before ending his own life, a stabbing on Main Beach, $360,000.00 in counterfeit Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo, and Gucci purses being found in a Laguna Beach home, and $125,000.00 in seized Marijuana.
