A-Affordable Lawn & Tree Co. would like to offer preventative weed control tips for the spring months.
Lawns are beginning to break through their dormant winter stage this time of year. The change in season invites invasive weeds waiting to invade beautiful lawns. It’s important to take preventative measures to ensure an emerald green lawn for the spring and summer.
Weeds fall into two main categories: broadleaf weeds (dicots) and grassy weeds (monocots). Another important aspect of weed control is distinguishing between annual weeds (live and die in one season) and perennial weeds (live for several years). There are five primary weed control steps:
Preventative Weed Control – any control method that aims to prevent weeds from being established in a cultivated crop, pasture or greenhouse. Examples would include certified weed free seed, and screening irrigation water to prevent weed seeds from traveling along irrigation ditches.
Cultural Weed Control – any technique that involves maintaining field conditions such that weeds are less likely to become established and/or increase in number. Examples include: crop rotation, avoiding overgrazing, and maintaining good soil fertility.
Mechanical Weed Control – refers to any technique that involves the use of farm equipment to control weeds.
Biological Weed Control – involves the use of natural enemies of weed plants to control the germination of weed seeds of the spread of the established plant. Examples include: cinnabar moths and the tansy flea beetle to control tansy ragwort.
Chemical Weed Control - involves the application of a chemical (herbicide) to weeds or soil to control the germination or growth of the weed species.
Using preventative weed control doesn’t allow weeds to germinate and thus breaks the life-cycle. The best method of keeping weeds out is maintaining a properly mowed and healthy lawn. Mow high as to keep the turf shading the soil, keeping the sun and heat from reaching the weed seeds.
