Camellia sasanqua was never more beautiful or more affordable.

Now is the perfect time of year to plant Camellias. They are at the height of their bloom and beauty in early spring. Western Star Nursery, a wholesale nursery in the Bay Area and Sacramento, is offering discounts of up to 50 percent on many varieties of Camellias in 1, 5 and 15 gallon containers. It’s a great opportunity for nurseries, landscaping contractors and developers to take advantage of the spectacular beauty of camellias while many other plant varieties are dormant.

"I am partial to the Camellia japonica 'Covina' with its beautiful deep rose semi-double blooms. With their glossy green leaves and winter/spring blossoms, Camellias bring beauty to an otherwise bleak winter landscape," says Pete Havens, the General Manager at Western Star Nursery and a veteran nurseryman.

Plants in the Camellia genus range from shrubs to trees up to 15 feet tall. They are notable for their glossy serrated leaves and large, colorful flowers in colors like white, pink, and red. Many species of Camellias are well suited to northern California climates.

Western Star grows a large selection of Camellia japonica (Japanese Camellia), the most common Camellia species. This member of the tea family is sometimes called “the rose of winter” and is often seen in Chinese and Japanese gardens. Varieties of Camellia japonica on sale at Western Star include Covina, Debutante, Kramers Supreme, Spellbound, and Mrs. Tingley.

Another species on sale now is Camellia sasanqua, known as Christmas Camellia. This species is an evergreen shrub from southern Japan. It is a very adaptable and hardy shrub, thriving in full sun and semi-shade. Western Star is offering discounts on Camellia sasanqua varieties like Cleopatra, Shishi Gashira, Showa no Sakae, and White Dove.

Western Star also offers a large selection of landscape supplies, including many unusual varieties of trees and shrubs.
