Sydney Surgeon Dr Moshegov has successfully completed a world-first iLASIK procedure, where he narrated each step of his own laser eye surgery as it was performed.

As Dr John Males conducted the iLASIK treatment, Dr Moshegov explained every part of the surgery as it was filmed. From the flap creation to post-operative aftercare, he spoke as if he was speaking to one of his own Perfect Vision patients.

In a recount of his iLASIK experience, Dr Moshegov the results even surprised himself.

"I have just tested myself, my right eye is 6/6 unaided (it was 6/9 or 6/12 preop) and my left eye sees 6/7.5 with -2.25D."

However, never being under the laser himself, the experience was an enlightening education for the industry veteran.

"I can easily appreciate the improvement in my near vision this morning. In the morning the eyes were still gritty. Both were a bit hazy for the first half hour" Dr Moshegov said. "I felt as though I wanted to wash them out but, instead, just put my drops in. They resolved this in no time."

The actual experience of the laser eye surgery was pain-free, as he expected. he noted, he commented on the equipment that assisted in correcting his vision and how his own experience has improved his knowledge on how to communicate the process with the patients.

"The ‘circle’ of lights I saw under the IntraLase is actually quite large in diameter. The reflection on the cornea, as the surgeon sees it through the microscope, is quite small and so I was surprised that it appeared as a giant round oval from the patient’s perspective."

The mini-documentary of Dr Moshegov’s narrated surgery will be uploaded to PerfectVision.com.au in January 2010.
