Pork Barrel BBQ’s competition barbecue team is proud to have beaten the odds in Vegas and come home a winner in the inaugural Academy of Country Music (ACM) BBQ Throwdown finishing 3rd out of 112 teams and winning the pork category this past weekend in Las Vegas. The two-day barbecue competition, held in conjunction with the ACM Awards at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, included 112 competition barbecue teams from across the nation and the United Kingdom.

Pork Barrel BBQ, the reigning Grand Champion of the Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle and current Purdue National Chicken Champions, had to put their best effort forward to win the official Kansas City Barbecue Society judges over against a top-ranked field of teams who traveled from coast to coast to compete in Las Vegas. Las Vegas is the furthest west the Pork Barrel BBQ team has traveled to compete and proved to be worth the trip. Pork Barrel BBQ ultimately won the pork contest and placed 6th in chicken on their way to their overall finish of 3rd place.

Several of country music’s top artists were part of the fan-focused event, including Scotty McCreery, Craig Morgan, John Rich and the Zac Brown Band.

“They say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but we’re happy to be bringing our national award winning barbecue back to our restaurant in Alexandria, Virginia so the people of the greater D.C. area can taste it for themselves,” said Heath Hall, President and co-founder of Pork Barrel BBQ. “It feels good to be one of the few who can say they have left Vegas as winners.”

“We’re thrilled to bring home a first place trophy in pork from the west coast and couldn’t have done it without our wood sponsor, Fruita Wood Chunks who supplied us with the highest quality wood for smoking available on the market today,” added Hall.

BBQ competitions provide competition barbecue teams with the opportunity to meet and compete against the best pitmasters and culinary minds in the world. The Pork Barrel BBQ team was honored to get the chance to spend some time with Chef Rusty Hamlin, Executive Chef for the Zac Brown Band, and the culinary genius behind the bands “Eat & Greet” events for Zac Brown Band fans. The BBQ Throwdown contest is part of the ACM Experience, the first-ever, free, open-to-the-public country music lifestyle event created for fans by the Academy of Country Music. The ACM BBQ Throwdown and the activities for the three-day, fan-focused event were part of “The Week Vegas Goes Country”.

Since Pork Barrel BBQ was founded in 2009, the company has participated in many of the nation’s most prestigious barbecue competitions across the country including the American Royal Invitational, Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue, and the Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle. Pitmasters and Pork Barrel BBQ co-founders Hall and Brett Thompson have accumulated multiple awards and top place finishes including winning the People’s Choice Award for best BBQ sauce, becoming the reigning National Chicken Champions, and having their sauces declared one of the “125 Best Foods for Men” by Men’s Health Magazine and Country Living Magazine naming their sauce to the list of “Best Barbecue Sauce in the Country”.

About Pork Barrel BBQ
Pork Barrel BBQ was founded in December 2008 during the peak of the economic crisis to prove that a company not owned or operated by the federal government could succeed, and that if you had a good idea, it was still possible to grab a piece of the American Dream. Pork Barrel BBQ founders, Heath Hall and Brett Thompson, ran the company out of the basement of their houses, selling their award winning BBQ products one bottle at a time. In less than one year, their Pork Barrel BBQ Sauces and Spice Rub were carried in over 1,000 stores in 40 states. Throughout their journey, they have stayed true to their mission – to unite the nation through the great tradition of BBQ, and bring bipartisan flavor to your next meal. The Pork Barrel BBQ Competition BBQ Team entered its first contest, The Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle, in June 2009, and walked away with two trophies – Second Place in the “Nations Best BBQ Sauce Contest” and Fourth Place for their pulled pork in the Memphis In May portion of the contest. Since then, the team has won multiple awards, including the 2011 Perdue National Chicken Championship, the Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle in 2011, the “Chinet People’s Choice” award for best BBQ sauce in 2010 and other notable Memphis in May and Kansas City Barbecue Society BBQ competition accolades as well as having their Pork Barrel BBQ Original BBQ Sauce named Best Sauce in America and one of “The 125 Best Foods for Men” by Men’s Health Magazine in November 2010.
