While managed service providers are not a new concept, the service has taken many names in the past. A managed service provider (MSP) is a third-party contractor that offers network-based services, applications and equipment to companies unwilling or unable to provide those services for themselves. Previous terms for this have been Application Service Provider (ASP), and Software As A Service (SaaS). Managed service providers are sometimes referred to as management service providers. In the past, MSP was used to describe infrastructure services on a subscription basis, but with the current prevalence of cloud computing, managed IT services and management services have become synonyms.

Managed service providers are typically access providers or hosting companies that provide information technology (IT) services. The main example is fully outsourced network management arrangements, including IP telephony, call center management, VPNs, managed firewalls and monitoring/reporting of network servers.
