Students from Cumberland Academy of Georgia experienced a unique history lesson this week when the school was honored by receiving a visit from a World War II veteran. World War II Veteran Bob “Punchy” Powell visited Cumberland’s high school aged students. As a war veteran, Powell experienced many battles and had a lot of historical information to share with the students. Powell flew in the 352nd Fighter Group and has written books on his experiences. Cumberland students were captivated as Powell spoke on his training and missions during the war.
Cumberland students have been studying World War II, and they were able to experience history through Powell’s description of his missions. Powell was able to answer all the student’s questions about life as a World War II pilot and life in battle. Cumberland students returned to the classroom with a clear picture of this time in history. “Our students were riveted by Punchy’s experiences,” said Debbi Scarborough, founder of Cumberland Academy of Georgia. “He taught us all the true meaning of patriotism and loyalty.”
