We saw a lot of new creative ways to use LEDs. The amount of participation shows LED projects are a favorite of Instructables users.

Elemental LED, a San Francisco Bay Area-based LED lighting company announced the winners of its first LED contest with Instructables.com, the popular do-it-yourself site that receives 15 million unique visitors each day. Makers from across the globe entered the contest and 14 entrants won prizes. The contest successfully introduced Elemental LED to the Instructables community, and has become a source of inspiration for makers on how to incorporate LEDs into creative projects.

Instructables Contest Manager, Carley Jacobson stated, “We saw a lot of new creative ways to use LEDs. LED projects are a favorite of Instructables users and that was evident with the amount of participation.”

The grand prize winner of the contest was Frederick Ford from Hampshire, United Kingdom, who submitted his project of psychedelic LED matrix glasses. Ford transformed a pair of shutter shades by mounting LEDs and coding his own C program for customized visual effects through an Arduino. He won an Elemental LED PAR 64 RGB LED Wall Washer, a spool of High Density RGB LED Strip Light and an Apollo Jammer LED Music Controller.

The three first prize winners were Daniel Bujak from Ontario, Canada, George Ainscough from Lancashire, UK and Al Linke from Santa Clara, CA. Their creations included an Android controlled interactive mirror reminiscent of Snow White, LED foot peg signals perfect for motorcyclists and a board with a light show made of ping pong balls. They each won a spool of High Density RGB LED Strip Light and an Apollo Jammer LED Music Controller. Elemental LED also awarded ten runners up and some of these projects included a Lite Brite LED alarm clock, blue bicycle rims and a solar powered USB power supply and charger. Each runner up won an Apollo Jammer LED Music Controller.

The Instructables community narrowed down the 157 entrants to 16 finalists through voting. Anyone with an Instructables account could choose one project to vote for during the contest period. A panel consisting of Instructables and Elemental LED employees then chose the 14 winners out of the 16 finalists. There were a total of 14 judges: 3 from Instructables and 11 from Elemental LED.

“I was expecting a lot of entries and boy was there a lot of entries. This made it very difficult to choose the best ones since they were all very well done. The amount of details that went into the instructions that even included electrical equations, and PCB assembly instructions was very impressive. Well executed!” said Elemental LED Account Manager James Chau, one of the judges on the panel.

The contest was launched on July 19 and lasted six weeks, closing on August 30. Any Instructables project that included at least one LED was accepted for the contest. All the winners’ projects can be seen at the LED contest page at Instructables.com along with all the entries.

The Instructables LED contest is the first competition Elemental LED sponsored that was open to the public. The contest exemplifies one of Elemental LED’s core values: To cultivate creativity and knowledge in an ever-evolving field. The company released a new video that demonstrates that core value through the company’s own in-house DIY competition. The video gives an inside look at the creative members of Elemental LED’s team, who are constantly thinking of new innovative lighting concepts and designs. Sharing their projects with each other and through Instructables creates a place of inspiration and an open dialogue with the greater DIY community.

“Branching out from our own DIY contest with the Instructables LED contest was such a success that we’d like to turn it into an annual event. One idea we have bubbling is requiring entries to include recycled material in addition to LEDs, much like most of the Elemental LED employee DIY projects,” said Rachel Agana, Elemental LED Social Media Marketing.
