Blue Diamond Growers, the largest almond processor in the world, is saving more than $153,000 per year in energy costs as the result of a state-of-the-art SmartLighting upgrade completed by SmartWatt Energy at processing plants in Sacramento and Salida, CA. SmartLighting combines the most technologically advanced lighting and lighting control systems available to achieve the greatest possible energy savings. This installation has shown an immediate reduction of 84 percent in lighting energy usage.

“Blue Diamond is committed to sustainability and continuous improvement throughout our operations,” said Geoff Pyka, Blue Diamond Growers Environmental Project Engineer. “These lighting projects presented a great opportunity to utilize new, energy saving technologies and further our efforts to protect the environment and the local communities that support us.”

SmartWatt Energy conducted a construction-grade energy audit of the two processing plants, then engineered a plan to replace the 1,072 existing Metal Halide lighting fixtures with LEDs throughout processing, refrigerated and freezer warehouse, distribution and loading dock areas. SmartWatt Energy also integrated a wireless mesh network control system, which gave Blue Diamond Growers advanced and centralized control of all of their facilities’ lighting systems. These SmartLighting solutions came with utility incentives of $341,518, reducing Blue Diamond Growers payback period for the project to approximately 2 years.

The new energy-efficient lighting systems installed by SmartWatt Energy will save 1,749,40 kWh of electricity per year, which is equivalent to removing 2,624,609 pounds of Carbon Dioxide from the environment or planting 386 acres of trees, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calculations.
