When a firm is not organized, it opens itself up to losing a case or client, damaging its reputation and worst-case scenario, leaves itself exposed to potential malpractice.

Sometimes the difference between a successful law firm and an unsuccessful one is organization. Each day, various things can go wrong if the practice is unorganized, and it can impact clients, cases and the firm. Fortunately, MatterCat, a recently launched law firm management app, helps attorneys avoid these potential catastrophes.
“When a firm is not organized, it opens itself up to losing a case or client, damaging its reputation and worst-case scenario, leaves itself exposed to potential malpractice,” said Doug Lyman, president of AltaPoint Data Systems, creator of MatterCat.
Lyman highlighted four common mishaps MatterCat helps attorneys avoid.
Loss of Money
MatterCat enables attorneys to capture billable time on the go with laptops, mobile tablets and “phablets," all without an Internet connection, Lyman said.
“If a lawyer isn’t able to bill his time, he isn’t able to make money,” he added. “We wanted to provide an efficient means for billing time and effectively running a firm.”
Loss of Information
MatterCat has the ability to capture notes on clients, cases and opposing counsel. These notes are synced with the cloud when an Internet connection is restored.
“Let’s face it, Post-it notes get lost in the hubbub of everyday life. But if you take notes in MatterCat, you will always have them stored in the cloud and available to review wherever you are,” Lyman said.
Loss of Communication
Once notes are backed up to the cloud, the information is available for review by anybody within the firm.
“MatterCat allows you to share information seamlessly with other members of the firm, whether it is your assistant, paralegal or another attorney,” said Lyman. “It makes communication much more fluid and efficient.”
In a future MatterCat update, the software will interface with Google Calendar, allowing lawyers and other members of the firm to keep track of appointments and see others’ schedules.
“You’ll be able to see each member’s schedule and plan accordingly,” Lyman said. “You won’t risk double booking or missing appointments because all the information will be available to everyone.”
MatterCat is compatible with iOS and Android devices, tablets and Windows and Apple desktops and laptops . For more information about the legal practice management software or to request a download link visit http://mattercat.com/.
