The law firm of Jonathan W. Johnson, LLC announces the launch of BPOilDamageClaims.com to provide legal services to Gulf Coast business and property owners needing to file damage claims as a result of the BP oil spill.

Jonathan W. Johnson has nearly twenty years experience handling mass tort damage claims against major companies. Johnson is a 1992 graduate of the Columbia University School of Law, where he was an editor for the Columbia University Journal of Environmental Law. After graduating from law school, Johnson began his legal career with an environmental litigation law firm, representing a number of environmental groups.

BP has taken thousands of claims, but to date has paid only a small percentage of them. The claims process is evolving rapidly due to the severe and continuing damages that are occurring and the large amount of claimants.

Typical claimants include Gulf Coast property owners, beach condo, house, and hotel rental units, fishermen, crabbers, oystermen, and tourism related businesses. In addition, a large number of Gulf oil rig workers have lost their jobs and have claims, as well as some vacationers who made deposits on amenities whose beaches have become contaminated with oil. Others may have claims for natural resource and environmental damages.

The full scope of this disaster has not yet been realized. President Obama has proposed setting up an escrow account for BP to hold funds to pay damage claims, and has also proposed having a claim administrator to manage and handle those claims.

BP has publicly stated that it will pay all legitimate claims, but the system to do this is not yet adequate to do it in a timely fashion. It is also not clear what BP considers to be legitimate claims.

Mr. Johnson is located in Atlanta, Georgia where many Gulf property owners and business owners reside. He is offering free consultations on potential claims for Gulf Coast businesses and property owners, and will take cases and provide legal services on a contingency basis where no fee is owed unless a recovery is obtained.
