BP has taken thousands of claims, but to date has paid only a small percentage of them. The claims process is evolving rapidly due to the severe and continuing damages that are occurring and the large amount of claimants.

Typical claimants include Gulf Coast property owners, beach condo, house, and hotel rental units, fishermen, crabbers, oystermen, and tourism related businesses. In addition, a large number of Gulf oil rig workers have lost their jobs and have claims, as well as some vacationers who made deposits on amenities whose beaches have become contaminated with oil. Others may have claims for natural resource and environmental damages.

The full scope of this disaster has not yet been realized. President Obama has proposed setting up an escrow account for BP to hold funds to pay damage claims, and has also proposed having a claim administrator to manage and handle those claims.

BP has publicly stated that it will pay all legitimate claims, but the system to do this is not yet adequate to do it in a timely fashion. It is also not clear what BP considers to be legitimate claims.

Mr. Johnson is located in Atlanta, Georgia where many Gulf property owners and business owners reside.
